The Causes Of Excessive Hair Growth

Excessive hair growth can be a problem, especially for women, and many women will go through a variety of treatments ranging from waxing and tweaking to shaving and laser removal, in order to get rid of that hair. For men, excessive hair growth is not as much of a concern and it is primarily caused by an excess of testosterone in the body. More testosterone causes new hair to grow over time. Too much of it and it can result in hirsutism, which is testosterone flooding the body. There is a reason why the image of men over the years has been one of beards and hairy chests, simply because the more testosterone, the more 'manly' a person is seen. This is not really the case, but it is based on our own societal views.

Regarding women, there are many more causes for excessive hair growth, which is why so many women will go for laser hair removal.

  • The most common cause of excessive hair growth in women is too much testosterone, just like in men. If women have testosterone in their bodies at levels too high for females, there can be an increase in hair growth including on the chest and face.
  • Another cause of excessive hair growth in women is polycystic ovarian syndrome. This is when there is a tumor on the ovaries or adrenal gland. It should be noted that this is not a common cause of hair growth.
  • Cushing's Syndrome is another cause of excessive hair growth in women. Cushing's Syndrome is when there are high levels of cortisol in the blood and it is generally classed as a hormone disorder.
  • Some women do not suffer from any syndromes or hormonal problems, but are simply genetically meant to have excessive hair growth. In this case, the only option is to have the excessive hair removed through processes like laser hair removal.
  • If a woman is on medication, then there can be excessive hair growth. Anabolic steroids, Danazol and other medications have been found to cause an increase in hair growth in women.

No matter if you are a woman or a man, if you want to get rid of excessive hair growth on your body, then you are going to need to look at options to have it removed. While you can shave, this is horribly time consuming and the costs of razors begins to add up. You can wax, but this is horribly painful and it can actually cause you to get stitches if it is not done right. Therefore, what should you do if you want to remove hair and keep it away? In this case, laser hair removal is the only option. While it is expensive, it keeps you from ever shaving or waxing again. Once you have it done, you only have to go in for yearly appointments and that is it. Laser hair removal is the best cure for excessive hair growth.
